Covid-19: President Tebboune’s measures in effect from early Sunday

ALGIERS- The series of measures taken Tuesday by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to stem the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19), will enter into effect on Sunday (01:00). The series of measures, including isolation of confirmed and suspected cases, will run until April 4 and will be lifted or extended according to the evolution of the situation.

To get the situation under control, the president of the Republic decided the “suspension of all means of public transportation, be they private of state-owned, inside cities and inter-provinces as well as the railway traffic, the demobilization of 50% of the employees, except those working in vital services, with the retention of salaries, and the demobilization of female workers with infants.”

An executive decree defining the categories concerned by the demobilization will be promulgated by the Prime Minister. President Tebboune also ordered “a temporary closure of cafés and restaurants in major cities” and “the regulation of the market to fight shortages and ensure availability of basic foodstuffs.”

The president of the Republic also decided to create “within the current Supervisory and Monitoring Commission, at the ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform, a scientific committee to monitor the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic.”

Under the measures, the ministry of Finance will facilitate “the clearance of imported food products and speed up relevant banking procedures, according to the exceptional situation the country is going through.”

The president of the Republic stressed the need for “everyone to show a high level of responsibility, especially the media.”

He also noted the possibility to resort to “the People’s National Army that can help through field hospitals and human resources, such as physicians, specialists, paramedics and ambulances.”
