Civil status registration


  • Algerian parent (s) must report the birth of a newborn to the Consulate General of Algeria in the country of birth;
  • 12-s is an extract of a birth certificate, it is compulsory for the issuance of a biometric passport or ID card;
  • The marriage in the United States of an Algerian National must be registered at the Consulate General of Algeria in New York. A family book (livret de famille) is issued after registration & is free of charge;
  • All related documents can be filed in person without a prior appointment or by mail;
  • Applications sent by mail should be accompanied by a Priority Mail return envelope from USPS for a faster and safer return of your documents;
  • Incomplete applications sent by mail will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender.

  2. Or from the Town Hall of your place of birth (applying in person or by power of attorney issued by the consulate).

Required documents

  • Application form duly completed and signed;
  • Original full birth certificate or certified copy from the city hall (must include time of birth);
  • A copy of the applicant's proof of Algerian nationality and identity (Passport or National ID or Consular card or Military card)(if minor, parent's Algerian ID);
  • Family Book (if available).

Make sure, the first and last name of the parents shown on the child’s birth certificate is the same as it appears on the Algerian Civil Status register.

FOR AN APPLICANT BORN IN ANOTHER COUNTRY


Required documents

  • Application form duly completed and signed;
  • Original or certified copy of the applicant's full birth certificate issued by the country of Birth;
  • A copy of the applicant's proof of Algerian nationality and identity (Passport or National ID or Consular card or Military card)(if minor, parent's Algerian ID);
  • Copy of the Family Book (if available).

In the event of the death of an Algerian in the United States of America, the Consulate General guides and assists the family of the deceased in the administrative formalities for the transfer of the mortal remains to Algeria which is (Paperwork) dealt with by the Funeral Services appointed by the deceased's family or relatives.

The Consulate General proceeds with the transcription and the issuance of an Algerian death certificate as well as the Authorisation for the transfer of the remains "Autorisation de Transfert de corps".

Required documents

  • Death report duly completed and signed;
  • Birth certificate of the deceased;
  • Medical letter issued by the department of health (non-infection or non-communicable disease);
  • Original death certificate issued by the US authorities;
  • Embalming certificate issued by the funeral services;
  • Transit permit issued by the City Hall;
  • A certificate stating that the body has been laid out according to Muslim rituals;
  • A copy of the deceased proof of Algerian nationality and identity (Passport or National ID or Consular card or Military card);
  • Airway bill (flight itinerary);
  • Family Book (if available).

Make sure, the first and last names of the deceased and his parents shown on the death certificate are the same as they appear on the Algerian Civil Status register.

DIVORCE REGISTRATION


Regardless of the place of marriage, a divorce pronounced in the United States of America or by any other foreign judicial authority, cannot produce its effects in Algeria if it is not recognized by an Algerian court.

The procedure of recognition is called "Exequatur" and it is conducted in Algeria by the applicant who may be represented by a lawyer.
