Film Screening: “The Well” at the Consulate General of Algeria in NYC
On Saturday, December 3rd, the Consul General of Algeria in New York, Mrs. Sabria Boukdoum, hosted a film screening: The Well and welcomed the Director and Producer, Mr.Lotfi Bouchouchi who is visiting New York and Los Angeles, so that his movie reaches a worldwide audience necessary for the Oscars.
In addition to prizes won in Malmo Arab Film Festival, Maghreb Film Festival in Oujda, Muscat International Film Festival, “<strong>The Well</strong>” is the winner of Best Arabic Film, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay awards at the Alexandria International Film Festival.
The Well is submitted to the 2017 Oscar representing Algeria at the 89th Academy Awards for the best foreign language film. The winner will be announced during the OSCAR ceremony on the 26th February 2017
The featured movie <strong>The Well</strong> was produced in 2015, it recounts the story of women and their children in a village in southern Algeria and how, they had to choose the way they would die, because they were besieged for several days by the colonial army’s soldiers, who deprived them from drinking water.
The movie is meant as a new approach to further illustrate the absurdity of armed conflicts through the lens of the suffering of women and children. It constitutes an objective and timeless testimony of the valiant struggle of these vulnerable human categories against the throes of colonialism.
The event brought together dozens of members from the Algerian community in NYC, friends of Algeria and officials, representative from consular and diplomatic corps and different organizations such as the UN who enjoyed the screening, followed by a lively Q&A session afterwards with the director Lotfi Bouchouchi.
